styleWORKS

styleWORKS was a Brooklyn-based non-profit organization that provided free comprehensive grooming services, i.e., hair styling, make-up application, skincare analysis/facials/waxing, clothing, accessories, and image consulting to women moving from welfare to work. Coupled with, first and foremost, a comprehensive job training program, styleWORKS strived to add a fresh and useful dimension to the steps needed to make a successful transition from welfare to private sector employment.

styleWORKS provided over 2000 makeovers and was fortunate enough to have over 100 volunteers, 12 participating salons, and 22 referring agencies. Once a client was employed, she was eligible to enroll in our mentoring program or book club. Both programs were geared towards supporting our clients throughout each aspect of their journey from welfare to satisfying long-term employment.

After seven years of offering direct services as a non-profit, styleWORKS now provides grooming seminars on a consultant basis only and continues to offer monthly mentoring and job retention-based services to past clients, such as the styleWORKS book club. In addition, through The Angelrock Project, we continue to refer clients to other welfare-to-work organizations and provide literature on how to start a similar organization in other cities.
